Liberty Eagles
1868 $10 MS61 NGC. All Liberty Head eagles from the 1860s are very scarce, especially in high grades. The 1868 is no exception, with only 10,630 coins struck. Although Garrett and Guth wrote in their 2006 Gold Encyclopedia, "Besides the 1861 eagle, the 1868 is easily the most common date of the 1860s, having enjoyed a high survival rate," probably no more than 200 pieces are believed extant. Uncirculated representatives are major condition rarities. NGC has seen two coins in this grade and none finer, while PCGS lists three MS61 submissions and a single MS62 finer (2/17).
Softly frosted luster accompanies dominant peach-gold color, with accents of rose and green appearing throughout. Full radials and centers are present on the stars, and the eagle's wing feathers and claws are similarly bold. A touch of strike softness occurs on the forecurls, bun, and olive leaves. Each side is expectedly abraded.
