Liberty Eagles
1870-CC $10 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Trailing only the 1870-CC double eagle as the rarest gold issue from the Carson City Mint (and only slightly more available than that famous rarity), the 1870-CC eagle is extremely challenging in any circulated grade. It is unknown in Uncirculated condition. Doug Winter estimates about 50 pieces are extant, while PCGS CoinFacts suggests 40 to 60 examples remain in all grades. Just 5,908 pieces were struck.
This coin displays XF sharpness with strong definition despite moderate wear and a light cleaning. Faint hairlines run vertically across the surfaces, visible under strong light with a loupe. Otherwise, the coin shows only a couple of small reeding marks and minimal field chatter. Traces of golden luster remain around the stars and legends, illuminated by glimpses its former prooflike fields. The 1870-CC is always challenging for Liberty ten collectors as well as for Carson City specialists. This is a satisfying example for the assigned grade.
