Liberty Eagles
1871 $10 AU53 NGC. The mintage of only 1,790 coins pretty well explains the rarity of the 1871 gold eagle, although this issue remains somewhat underappreciated by the general collecting public. About Uncirculated examples are rare, and Mint State pieces are prohibitively so. It is unlikely that more than 75 examples of the date survive in all grades. This AU piece displays sharp detail and reflective fields where light circulation has not dulled the mirroring. Straw-gold patina exhibits an expected amount of light contact marks.
