Liberty Eagles
1877-CC $10 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1-A. From a minuscule mintage of 3,332 pieces, the 1877-CC Liberty eagle is an elusive issue in all grades. The coins circulated heavily at the time of issue, few were saved by contemporary collectors, and few have surfaced in European holdings. PCGS estimates the surviving population at 60-75 examples in all grades and none have been certified in Mint State at either of the leading grading services.
This impressive AU53 specimen is lightly worn, with well-detailed design elements that show a touch of the usual softness on the hair above the ear and the arrow fletching. An interesting clash mark is evident above the eagle's right (facing) wing. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces exhibit a moderate number of minor abrasions and retain traces of original mint luster. Population: 7 in 53, 4 finer (1/17).
From The R. Thayer Sheets Yorktown Collection.
