Liberty Eagles
1879-CC $10 XF40 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1879-CC Liberty eagle claims the lowest mintage of any gold coin ever issued by the Carson City Mint. As might be expected, the 1879-CC is scarce-to-rare in all grades, though its elusive nature has been exaggerated by some numismatists in the past. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population at 45-60 examples in all grades. This impressive XF40 specimen shows some light wear on the well-detailed design elements, with a diagnostic die scratch through BER in LIBERTY and some incompleteness on the banner, due to die polishing. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and the overall presentation is most attractive. Population: 6 in 40, 27 finer (1/17).
From The R. Thayer Sheets Yorktown Collection.
