Liberty Eagles
1901-O $10 MS64 PCGS. Variety 3. The New Orleans Mint re-opened in 1879 with a primary mission of striking silver dollars. Small quantities of gold eagles were coined there each year through 1883, then intermittently (but with somewhat larger mintages) beginning in 1888. Survivors of those issues tend to be in AU55 to MS62 grades, bagmarked from indifferent shipment and storage. But this lustrous apricot-gold near-Gem is smooth aside from moderate contact on the left obverse field. Population: 20 in 64 (3 in 64+), 1 finer (2/17).
