Indian Eagles
1908 $10 Motto MS66+ PCGS. The 1908 Motto ten is generally an available issue and a popular first-year type coin with IN GOD WE TRUST featured prominently in the field left of the eagle. Its restoration on July 1, 1908 was the result of a public outcry after the new series' introduction in 1907. The coins were well-saved and rank among the more obtainable dates in MS65 or finer, but that is relative. Saint-Gaudens Indian Head eagles are notoriously elusive in Gem condition or finer, save for the 1926 and 1932. Premium Gem examples of the 1908 Motto are very scarce. This is the only MS66+ at PCGS (37 others qualify for MS66), and there are just 10 finer submissions at that service (2/17).
Both sides appear unmarked to the unaided eye, and this piece could just as well pass for a Premium Gem, hence the Plus designation. A microscopic tick on the cheek and two others left of the date probably explain the assessment. The surfaces are awash in coruscating frost and feature light shades of rose-gold. The obverse is fully struck, and just a touch of incompleteness occurs on the eagle's wing tip.
