Liberty Double Eagles
1863-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Breen-7217. Small S. The double eagle was, in practice, the unit of account in the West Coast economy. The coins were struck in considerable number by the San Francisco Mint, but all went into commerce, and none were saved for numismatic purposes until decades later. The 1863-S is known in Mint State, since some emerged from the S.S. Republic shipwreck, and other pieces were likely early arrivals in the burgeoning foreign bank holdings of U.S. gold coins. U.S. paper money was held in little regard overseas during the Civil War, and imports had to be purchased with gold coin. Nonetheless, examples such as the present piece with ample luster, original apricot color, and relatively few bagmarks, are very scarce and in demand. Population: 31 in 61, 24 finer (2/17).
