Liberty Double Eagles
1863-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Small S. Although not as rare as its Philadelphia counterpart, the 1863-S double eagle is still a challenging acquisition in Mint State. Coins grading finer than MS62 are major rarities. Nonetheless, this MS61 coin certainly stands out from its peers, as it does not show the heavy abrasions that are typically associated with this grade. Instead, a loupe reveals only light handling marks on Liberty's cheek and on the high points of the eagle. Luminous wheat-gold luster emerges from the fields when rotated beneath a light. Eye appeal surpasses expectations for the grade. Population: 31 in 61, 24 finer (2/17).
