Liberty Double Eagles
1866 $20 Motto MS61 PCGS. All double eagles struck at Philadelphia in 1866 bear the motto IN GOD WE TRUST amid the stars above the eagle. The motto was added to various denominations after the Civil War largely in response to the tragic bloodshed with which the four-year war between the states had oppressed society. However, legislation mandating its usage on United States coins was not passed until 1907, when President Roosevelt had the motto omitted from Saint-Gaudens' eagle and double eagle designs, feeling that it was sacrilege to have such an inscription on a monetary item that would widely be used for secular purposes.
The 1866 is the more available of the two With Motto double eagles of this date, although Mint State coins are still scarce in all grades. This MS61 example displays bold detail and thoroughly lustrous fields. Scattered abrasions determine the grade. Population: 41 in 61, 9 finer (2/17).
