Liberty Double Eagles
1872-CC $20 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-B. The mintmark is more widely spaced on this variety than the other two 1872-CC die pairings. The three die pairs struck only 26,900 coins combined, making the 1872-CC a scarce and sought-after Carson City issue. In their gold Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth write: "The population data for About Uncirculated condition are greatly inflated by resubmissions." Indeed, the frequency with which AU-level coins appear at auction falls far behind what would be expected if the population reports were accurate.
This About Uncirculated example displays bold design elements amid vibrantly lustrous yellow-gold fields. Scattered abrasions accompany the grade, as expected, and a brush of high-point wear blends some of Liberty's hair curls. Nonetheless, visual appeal is pleasing with regards to the issue's reputation for having unsightly bagmarks and wear.
