Liberty Double Eagles
1885-CC $20 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1-A. A meager mintage of 9,450 Liberty double eagles was accomplished at the Carson City Mint in 1885. The coins were released into circulation at the time of issue and few (if any) were saved by contemporary collectors, as there was little interest in collecting double eagles or branch mint issues at the time. Most survivors have been recovered from European holdings over the years. Accordingly, the 1885-CC is the most elusive CC-mint twenty of the decade. This Choice AU specimen shows just a touch of wear on the well-detailed design elements and the lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster. Overall visual appeal is quite strong. Population: 34 in 55, 58 finer (1/17).
