Liberty Double Eagles
1889-CC $20 MS60 NGC. Variety 1-A. Coining operations at the Carson City Mint resumed on October 1, 1889, having been on hiatus since March 1885. During the final three months of the year, the facility managed a production of 30,945 double eagles. In 2003, Rusty Goe estimated a general survivorship of 3.5% to 4% of the original mintage, including 175 to 195 examples in Uncirculated condition. Nearly a decade and a half later, that estimate still seems about right based on the certification totals at NGC and PCGS.
The stars are nearly fully brought-up and the hair strands are crisply rendered. Design detail on the eagle's feathers is similarly bold. This green-gold Mint State double eagle offers frosty luster over surfaces that show a predictable number of abrasions, including a prominent mark that runs down Liberty's cheek. Census: 25 in 60 (1 in 60+), 42 finer (2/17).
