Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1890-CC Liberty double eagle is one of the more available issues of the Carson City Mint series, from a fairly substantial mintage of 91,209 pieces. A number of coins were used to settle accounts in foreign trade and many examples have been recovered from European sources over the years. A small hoard surfaced in the mid-1990's to further augment the supply of collectible specimens. All these factors make the 1890-CC a favorite choice of branch mint type collectors.
The present coin is an impressive Mint State specimen, with vibrant mint luster and pleasing orange-gold surfaces that are lightly marked for the grade. The design elements are sharply detailed in most areas, but the eagle's tail feathers on the left were shallowly impressed on the die, making this area weak on all examples seen. Overall eye appeal is quite strong.
