Liberty Double Eagles
1892-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Few 1892-CC double eagles (27,265 coins minted) survive in Uncirculated condition. Estimates vary from 180 pieces to 250 coins in MS60 or higher. Those that avoided domestic circulation were likely exported abroad from San Francisco or set aside after August G. Heaton published his treatise on mintmarks the following year, stimulating interest in that area of collecting.
This lustrous MS61 twenty dollar gold piece displays a good strike, particularly over the centers. Several obverse stars exhibit a touch of inconsequential softness. A greenish cast complements orange and rose-gold surfaces. Lightly scattered bagmarks appear throughout.
