Liberty Double Eagles
1897-S $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1897-S double eagle is an available date through MS64, but at the Gem level it becomes a major condition rarity. PCGS has seen only a dozen submissions in Gem condition, and only three finer coins are reported by PCGS and NGC combined (2/17). This is the sort of coin that collectors of high-end double eagles will only encounter once or twice a year at auction. Since 1993, we have handled just 16 Gem-graded examples and none finer. The strike is sharp, and each side displays vibrant, frosty yellow-gold mint luster with no major abrasions -- a few marks on Liberty's cheek are all that limit this coin's potential. Population: 12 in 65 (1 in 65+), 2 finer (2/17).
