Liberty Double Eagles
1905 $20 MS64 PCGS. 30th Anniversary Green Label Holder. Boasting a mintage of only 58,919 pieces, the 1905 double eagle is among the scarcer 20th century issues in the series in high grade. In fact, the issue is a major rarity above MS63 and is nearly unknown in Gem condition. Since 1993, we have offered only three 1905 twenties in MS64, the last in December 2014, where a Plus-graded NGC coin garnered nearly $25,000. The price record for this issue is held by the lone MS65, an NGC coin that realized more than $57,000 when we auctioned it in 2008. It has not been seen at auction since, and the present PCGS example is only the third near-Gem that has been offered in the past nine years. The rarity of the 1905 double eagle in this condition cannot be overemphasized.
This coin displays frosty yellow-gold luster and exceptional surface preservation. Were it not for a few faint lines on Liberty's cheek, a Gem designation might have been achieved. Even so, the quality and eye appeal of this coin make it one of the highlights of this sale. The surfaces display luminous mint luster that the viewer's eye finds pleasing to look upon. As stated, there are none finer at PCGS and only one at NGC (2/17).
