Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1909-D $20 MS64 PCGS. With a mintage of 52,500 coins, the 1909-D ranks 4th in production and 14th in survival among the Saint-Gaudens double eagles according to Roger Burdette's recent research. Just 1,200 pieces are thought to survive in all grades -- a small number for the legions of collectors attracted to the series and its mintmarked scarcities. This example displays a repunched mintmark -- apparently, not as scarce as once thought, but interesting nonetheless. The present near-Gem coin is a sharply struck with lustrous and satiny mellow-gold surfaces interrupted by remarkably few marks and minor abrasions. There are only 24 numerically finer pieces recorded by PCGS (2/17).
