Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1909-D $20 MS64 PCGS. Repunched mintmark. Only the 1908-S, 1913-S, and the High Relief have a lower mintages than the 1909-D. Just 52,500 pieces were struck, and virtually all of the mintage was exported to either Central and South America or to European holdings. At least two mint-sealed bags returned from South America, yielding most of the Mint State survivors known today. This near-Gem example shows a few light marks from transport, yet the coin retains its frosty Mint-fresh luster and gleaming rich-gold color. A sharp strike covers both sides. PCGS reports just 24 numerically finer examples (2/17).
