Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1911-S $20 MS66 PCGS. Most of the mintage of 757,580 pieces of 1911-S twenties were struck in February and March 1911, with lesser quantities produced in September and December. From this mintage, approximately 450,000 coins were shipped to Europe and 250,000 went to Central America (some say El Salvador). In spite of the large numbers exported and later repatriated, the 1911-S is very scarce in MS66, indicating the hoard coins were roughly handled while abroad. This is an exceptionally pleasing example with smooth, virtually unabraded surfaces. The mint luster is frosted and both sides exhibit rich orange-gold color and a complete strike. Population: 42 in 66 (2 in 66+), 1 finer (2/17).
