Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1913-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1913-S is always a popular collector issue because of its impressively low mintage of only 34,000 pieces. For a coin with such a limited production run, it is surprisingly available in the lower grades of Mint State; however, near-Gems such as this piece are infrequently offered. Sharply defined throughout, the current coin is more satiny than frosty with only a few light abrasions. Smooth luster reveals variegated toning ranging from rich, apricot-gold coloration to whispers of light green with bright-orange accents. The design elements are generally well struck, although the Capitol Building exhibits a drooping dome. PCGS reports a mere 24 numerically finer specimens (2/17).
