Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Park Avenue Collection. This piece is sharply struck and fully lustrous with rich, honey-gold color that is highlighted by blaze-orange centers plus light-olive and lilac accents near the borders. The surfaces exhibit a few tiny marks that are consistent with the grade.
Today, survival estimates suggest only 1,100 or so coins exist, although at one time this date was considered to be an impossible rarity. In fact, B. Max Mehl once claimed that only three pieces were known. Walter Breen wrote that almost all known survivors were imported from French banks in the mid-1950s. Such "imports" continued in the last few decades to rank the 1924-S 13th in scarcity among the 43 series dates. It remains scarce in near-Gem condition and rare any finer. Population: 127 in 64 (8 in 64+), 6 finer (2/17).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2007), lot 5280.
