Washingtonia
(1790) Medal Washington Before Boston, Bronze, Original, MS62 Brown PCGS Secure. Baker-47B, Betts-542, Julian MI-1b, Musante GW-09-P1. The most famous of all Washington medals, the Washington Before Boston is ranked #2 in the Whitman 100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens reference. The medal is part of the Comitia Americana series, and celebrates Washington's victory in the Siege of Boston. The British evacuated the major seaboard city on March 17, 1776, following an occupation of nearly a year. The present piece was struck from the original Paris Mint dies, engraved by Pierre Simon Duvivier. They can be identified by an unevenly spaced date and a die lump above the E in ADSERTORI. The obverse shows a bust of Washington, based on the 1785 Jean-Antoine Houdon statue. The reverse depicts Washington directing officers on Dorchester Heights. This chocolate-brown example has a full strike and exceptionally unmarked surfaces. Subtle carbon on the reverse field limits the grade but not the eye appeal.
