Early Dollars
1799 $1 8x5 Stars, B-23, BB-159, R.3, VF35 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. Always in demand as the sole variety with the obverse stars configured eight left, five right, the BB-159 variety was either a Mint experiment or simply a die maker's mistake when an eighth star was punched into the left-hand margin. The precise spacing between each star and the careful curved alignment suggest it was not a mistake. The present Choice VF example displays lovely iridescent patina with shades of sea-green, blue, and reddish-tan toning that grace both sides of this well-centered and sharply defined dollar. A glass reveals a few light lines, but no significant abrasions or marks. Population: 6 in 35, 24 finer (2/17).
