Trade Dollars
1874-CC T$1 MS60 PCGS. Tall CC. Period after FINE. Rusty Goe puts forth the following estimates in his 2003 opus, The Mint on Carson Street: Of the 1.3 million 1874-CC Trade dollars struck, only 27,000 or so remained in that city, the rest being exported. That would have left approximately one coin per resident at the time. He further suggests upwards of 90% of those coins were melted in the following years. PCGS now estimates that 1,000 pieces survive. Mint State representatives are very scarce. This bright Uncirculated Trade dollar lacks the slightest hint of color. The stars, olive leaves, feathers, and talons are bold, while Liberty's head shows minor softness. Myriad abrasions dot the semireflective surfaces.
