Proof Trade Dollars
1879 T$1 PR63 PCGS. Concealed by a cloak of orange and tan-gold toning, the underlying mirrored surfaces hide their reflectivity until viewed at the proper angle to enliven this inaugural proof-only Trade dollar. Struck for collectors and embraced by speculators, the 1879 issue had an ambitious 1,541-piece mintage. The present Select example shows faint diagonal roller marks and a touch of strike weakness on the peripheral devices beneath the dusky, original toning.
