Morgan Dollars
1896-S $1 MS63 PCGS. VAM-5. A Hot 50 Variety. Several hundred 1896-S Morgans were acquired by Reno investor LaVere Redfield many years ago, and eventually they were disbursed to the market through his estate. We can only guess if this MS63 specimen is one of those coins, but if it was, it is among the finest to emerge from that slightly haphazard hoard. We note that the coin is essentially untoned with bright luster with only a few minor abrasions on the cheek and neck. A sharp strike occurs on the motifs, except on the hair over Liberty's ear, which is a touch weak. Variety collectors will note this is the S/S repunched mintmark, the "Hot 50" VAM-5, with clear evidence of the undermark and an unfinished area of the die within the bow.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2006), lot 2273, where it brought $3,105; ANA Signature (Heritage, 2/2014), lot 4926, where it brought $4,406.
