1759 (1999) $1 Martha Washington Dollar, "N" and "N", Judd-2185, Pollock-Unlisted, Low R.7, MS65 NGC. The 1759-dated obverse has a portrait of Martha Washington facing right, while the reverse shows a view of Mount Vernon. This design, which omits a denomination and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, has been used by the Mint to test candidate coinage alloys since 1965. The present piece was likely struck in 1999, when the Sacagawea dollar was planned with a "golden" color to distinguish the denomination from a quarter. The letter N was crudely entered into the left and right field of the obverse die, to identify pieces struck in that specific non-manganese alloy. A torn sticker accompanies the piece identifying the composition as 77% copper / 20% zinc / 3% nickel. Plain edge. The surfaces are remarkably bright with the only mentionable flaws being a faint trace of a fingerprint and slight abrasion across Martha's cheek.
