Liberty Quarter Eagles
1848-C $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Variety 2. The 1848-C has a meager mintage of 16,788 pieces, yet two die marriages are known. At least 80% of survivors are Variety 1. The present example is the rare Variety 2, identifiable at a glance by the wavy, buckled obverse field. Presumably, the obverse die was improperly annealed prior to use. The minimally marked straw-gold surfaces show blending of impression on Liberty's neck curl and the eagle's head and neck, yet nice luster and substantial eye appeal remain. Census (all varieties): 26 in 55, 44 finer (2/17).
