Classic Half Eagles
1838-C $5 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. VF Details. Breen 6516, Variety 2, R.5. Just 17,159 pieces were struck, making this Charlotte issue second only to the 1834 Crosslet 4 in rarity among the Classic Head fives. Olive-gold color spreads evenly over both sides of this smoothly worn example, which at one time was cleaned but not harshly. A heavy diagonal die break with a long, wide retained internal cud adds interest to the reverse, as does the repunched 5 in the denomination. This is a suitable coin for any collection of mintmarked gold despite the old cleaning.
