Liberty Half Eagles
1888-S $5 MS64 ANACS. Medium orange-gold fields showcase minimal ticks and grazes with radiant cartwheel luster that rolls over each side. Central design detail is bold but the strike characteristics soften around the margins. This underrated, conditionally rare San Francisco half eagle is a monumental rarity in MS64. David Akers wrote in 1979, "I have seen only a few mint state pieces and consider this date to be very rare and undervalued." True enough even today, with the present coin one of the "sleepers" of the sale. Neither PCGS nor NGC report seeing an example finer than MS63, with eight such coins at PCGS and three at NGC but none finer (3/17).
