Liberty Half Eagles
1893-CC $5 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The spike from a denticle left of the 1, and the mintmark placement attribute the die marriage. Rusty Goe writes in The Mint on Carson Street (2003): "Workmanship on 1893-CC half eagles was as good as or better than on any other year in the series and many quality examples survive today." Here is one of them. Both sides are brightly lustrous and well-struck. Rich, mellow-gold surfaces feature splashes of reddish color near the borders -- a common trait among 1893-CC fives -- and tiny flecks throughout. From a final-year mintage of 60,000 coins.
