The silver issues of Jean de Brienne are notoriously rare and must have been produced as an experimental large denomination that was not accepted by the populace. When it was minted is uncertain as well, but Metcalf, Ash. P. 74, suggests that it may have been struck after 1212, but before the ill-fated attempt of the Fifth Crusade to take Egypt in 1217.
