UMAYYAD, TEMP. AL-WALID I (86-96h), Dirham, al-Qandal 96h. WEIGHT: 2.31g. REFERENCE: Klat 517. CONDITION: Clipped, minor graffiti, otherwise very fine or better and extremely rare. Al-Qandal has long been classified as one of the Umayyad 'mystery mints,' but a proposal by Enrico Leuthold (Ricerche sui Dirham Umayyadi, Milan, 2008, p. 39) and further research by Lutz Ilisch has confirmed that this mint was present-day Gandava, located in what is now Pakistan. It appears that during Umayyad military expansion into the Indian subcontinent a mint was established in the port-town of al-Daybul in 95h, which later transferred to al-Qandal in 96h and al-Hind (possibly Multan?) in 97h. (4000 - 6000 GBP)
