UMAYYAD, TEMP. HISHAM (105-125h), Dinar, Ifriqiya 106h. REVERSE: In margin: pellet below century of date in margin. WEIGHT: 4.28g. REFERENCES: Walker -; Bernardi 44Ca, citing a single example of this date; cf Spink Zurich auction 27, 1 June 1988, lot 41, same reverse die). CONDITION: Obverse a little weak and struck from an old and rusty die, generally about extremely fine and excessively rare. The obverse die used to strike this specimen, which shows considerable evidence of die-rust, had previously been used to strike Ifriqiya dinars in the previous year (cf Sotheby's auction, 3 May 2001, lot 902). A similar pairing of a single obverse die with reverse dies of different years may also be observed on the examples dated 104h and 105h published in the Sylloge of Islamic Coins in the Ashmolean (SICA 2, 335 and 336). This suggests that these coins can only ever have been struck in small quantities, which is consistent with their rarity today. (20000 - 30000 GBP)
