Theophilus. 829-842. Æ Follis (23mm, 4.89 g, 6h). Uncertain provincial mint. Crowned half-length bust facing, holding labarum and globus cruciger / + ӨЄO/FILЄ AVG/OVSτЄ SV/ ҺICAS in four lines. DOC 17; SB 1685. VF, green patina, a few cleaning marks.

This general type was struck in large numbers at Constantinople, but the somewhat clumsy engraving and exaggerated tufts of hair are more characteristic of a class that Grierson (DOC) thought to be minted at a provincial mint (see especially DOC 17.3 for similar obverse style).
