Cuba Banco Nacional de Cuba 10 Pesos ND (1905) Pick 68. The largest denomination in the planned 1905 emission from the National Bank of Cuba, this 10 Peso note features a large oval portrait of Tomas Estrada Palma. Born in 1835, he served as President of the Republic of Cuba in arms during the Ten Years War (1868-1878). He was captured by the Spanish and sent into exile. He made his way to New York and worked with Jose Marti and upon Marti's death assumed leadership of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. On December 31, 1901 he was elected President of the Republic of Cuba and served from 1902-1906. he passed away in 1908, three years after these notes were scheduled for introduction. As is the case with all four denominations, the back features a detailed vignette of the "Morro Castle", a fortress built in 1589 whose purpose was to defend the city and harbor from attack. Most authorities believe that the three lower denominations of these notes were never released to circulation. PMG grades this lovely example Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. Experienced collectors understand that there will be few opportunities to acquire one of these uncancelled, regular issue notes which are treasures of Cuban numismatics.
