Cuba Republica de Cuba 5 Pesos 1934 Pick 70 Progress Proof. Designs and plates for the 1934 issue of Cuban notes was done by the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The BEP had much stricter controls over proofs, specimens, and other matter related to the printing process, resulting in very few items making it into the hands of collectors. This piece is a partial progress proof printed on paper mounted to cardstock measuring about 9.5. inches wide by 6.5 inches tall. The vignette is nearly complete at the center, though not not fully engraved at the edges. The outer frame with the REPUBLICA DE CUBA title are also just shy of completion. A later proof offered here shows the last of the details from this proof finished as well as the portrait, denomination designations in the fields, and signature panels completed. Our experience of the controls imposed by the BEP over the release of items like this, we can assume that if not unique, these two proofs are at the very least exceedingly rare as we know of no other examples.
