Seated Half Dimes
1854-O H10C Arrows MS65 PCGS. In the years 1851 and 1852, silver coinage virtually disappeared from circulation, the result of a massive influx of California gold. In 1853, the Mint reduced the weight of silver coinage (signified by Arrows on either side of the date), and the dearth of silver coinage was remedied. The Philadelphia Mint struck nearly 19 million half dimes in 1853 and 1854, while the New Orleans Mint produced more than 3.7 million half dimes during the same period. Most examples circulated to extinction (collectors had no interest in mintmarks), and today Gem O-Mint coins are rare. This vibrantly toned MS65 example displays blue and reddish-gold toning over lustrous and nearly unmarked surfaces. The strike is needle-sharp on Liberty's head and the surrounding stars. Population: 10 in 65, 4 finer (3/17).
