1860-S 25C -- Scratch -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Briggs 1-A. In its early years, the San Francisco Mint favored the half dollar over other silver denominations. In 1860, the facility struck 472,000 halves, but only 56,000 quarters. Since there were few if any collectors in the Old West, those pieces typically remained in commerce until they were worn out and melted. This slate-gray example is occasionally microgranular, but the faint scratches on the seated Liberty are much less significant than implied by the PCGS designation.
