Seated Half Dollars
1844 50C Repunched Date, WB-102, Die Pair 7, R.3, MS63 NGC. The 1 and 8 in the date are boldly repunched south, giving the date a visual impression of slanting up to the right. A vertical die line closes the lower serif of the first S in STATES, and other vertical lines join the bottom two arrowheads to confirm the die marriage. This Select Uncirculated example is richly toned with cobalt-blue borders and orange-gold interiors. The fields are reflective -- almost prooflike -- but the mirroring is tempered by the toning. A sharply struck coin with only minimal marks for the assigned grade, softly lustrous and colorfully original. Census (all varieties combined): 14 in 63, 7 finer (3/17).
