Seated Half Dollars
1854-O 50C Arrows, WB-101, Die Pair 34, R.3, MS65 NGC. This naturally patinated near-Gem half was produced from the 34th of 58 die pairs identified in Bill Bugert's comprehensive 2013 monograph. More than 5.2 million pieces were struck in 1854 by the New Orleans Mint, so it is possible more die pairs remain to be discovered. The mintmark is nearly centered between the feather tip and the F of HALF, narrowing the number of possible die combinations considerably. Russet-red toning accents surround the devices of this pearlescent-silver example. The strike is sharp on Liberty's head, but less so on the adjacent star centers and on the eagle's left leg. Census (all varieties): 12 in 65, 10 finer (3/17).
Ex: Houston Money Show Signature (Heritage, 12/2015), lot 3188.
