Seated Half Dollars
1861-O 50C CSA Obverse, WB-102, FS-401, Die Pair 11, R.3, XF40 PCGS. This famous Confederate variety is not the scarcest half dollar die marriage produced while the New Orleans Mint was under Confederate control, but it is unquestionably the most historically significant one to numismatists. In a later use of the obverse die, it was paired with the genuine Confederate reverse die to strike four known "original" Confederate half dollars. The key pick-up point is a moderately strong die crack that runs from the dentil to the right of star 7 to the bridge of Liberty's nose, out her chin, and to the shoulder. This XF example displays rich, gunmetal-gray toning over both sides with sharp motifs and only muted marks diminished by wear. Light, silver-gray toning on the high points adds eye appeal to the remarkably smooth surfaces.
