Seated Half Dollars
1866-S 50C No Motto, Small Thin S, WB-101, XF45 PCGS. By the time new dies arrived from Philadelphia with the Motto IN GOD WE TRUST added to the reverse, the San Francisco Mint had already struck 60,000 No Motto half dollars and they were released into circulation. The Mint made use of dies it had on hand, and most of the No Motto pieces show die clashing. Faint clash marks appear on both sides of this Choice XF example. Attractive powder-gray and gold toning covers both sides, with small abrasions from time spent in circulation. LIBERTY is sharp on the shield, and traces of mint luster shine through the attractive toning. Population: 17 in 45, 18 finer (3/17).
