Seated Half Dollars
1871 50C Misplaced Date, WB-102, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Given the consistently high grades of virtually every Seated half dollar pedigreed to the Gardner Collection, this modest MS64 example seems out of place until you take into account what Gardner himself once said about this piece: "A coin that is surprisingly nice for the grade and surprisingly difficult to find finer. This coin offers a sharp strike, booming luster and top-notch eye appeal. There are several graded higher (including one MS67 NGC out there somewhere), but so far I have not seen any that I liked better."
In truth, near-Gems such as this coin are a great find -- finer coins are infrequently seen. Wonderful mint frost covers the central motifs, while the semireflective fields show a narrow crescent of russet-red toning on both sides of the coin. Sharply struck for the assigned grade, and virtually unmarked save for some tiny nicks and lines in the fields. The CAC endorsement is of utmost importance to the coin, as few pieces are so-honored at the grade. Population: 25 in 64, 7 finer. CAC: 4 in 64, 2 finer (3/17).
Ex: Purchased by Eugene Gardner from Dave Olmstead at Alpine Numismatics (1/2007); Eugene H. Gardner Collection, Part III (Heritage, 5/2015), lot 98485.
