Seated Dollars
1841 $1 MS63 PCGS. OC-4, R.1. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. An overall skin of translucent, light-gold toning covers reflective, nearly prooflike surfaces of this appealing Seated Dollar. Only random, small marks are distributed across the surfaces, with few in any way distracting or bothersome for this Select Uncirculated grade. The 1841 date is mysteriously rare in Uncirculated grades given its mintage of 140,750 pieces. Possibly some were stored and then melted, either domestically or overseas. This sharply-struck survivor is one of the condition rarities of the series, and it is a much more challenging date than reflected by recent pricing. An opportunity. Population: 19 in 63 (2 in 63+), 7 finer (3/17).
Ex: Chicago Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2014), lot 4554, which realized $8,812.50.
