Seated Dollars
1859 $1 MS64 NGC. CAC. OC-2, Low R.3. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. The mintage of the 1859 Seated dollar was a substantial 256,500 pieces. With such a large number struck, the 1859 should be available in better grades. But most of those produced were exported to northern China, where they were subsequently chopmarked or converted to bullion. The result is that relatively few Uncirculated 1859 dollars are known to collectors today. The present satiny near-Gem is brilliant, and well-struck except on the head of Liberty and the uppermost stars. Census: 15 in 64, 0 finer. CAC: 6 in 64, 1 finer (3/17).
