Trade Dollars
1873 T$1 MS64 PCGS. The 1873 Coinage Bill was signed into law on February 12, 1873 (in political circles, referred to as the Crime of '73). Among its provisions was the authorization to abolish the Seated Liberty dollar and issue Trade dollars in its place. Just under 400,000 Trade dollars were struck in 1873 at the Philadelphia Mint. Few were saved, and the issue is very scarce in Choice Uncirculated or finer grades. This original and lustrous near-Gem example flashes vibrant silver centers amid devices outlined by bluish-gray and deep-olive accents. Satiny surfaces show sharp definition with only minor and inconspicuous abrasions. Population: 53 in 64 (3 in 64+), 18 finer (3/17).
