Trade Dollars
1873 T$1 MS65 NGC. Trade dollars were issued to compete with Mexican silver coins in the Oriental trade. The Mexican coins were slightly heavier than the standard (Liberty Seated) silver dollars, and were the preferred coin of Asian merchants. The Trade dollar was authorized to compete with the Mexican silver coins, and these pieces were first coined in 1873. The San Francisco Mint, the closest facility to Asia, produced the majority of Trade dollars from 1873 through 1878. Declining silver prices soon marked the end of the Trade dollar experiment. The Philadelphia Mint produced 396,600 Trade dollars in the first year, including this sharply struck Gem that exhibits trivial grade-consistent marks, brilliant white surfaces, and bold design elements. Census: 6 in 65, 2 finer (3/17).
