Trade Dollars
1878-CC T$1 XF45 NGC. Intense lilac-gray toning covers this example of the very scarce 1878-CC, considered by many the most desirable of all circulation strike Trade dollars and a challenging acquisition in all grades. The 97,000-piece mintage was by far the lowest of the series (excluding proof-only issues), and that minuscule production was reduced further when undistributed Trade dollars were melted upon discontinuance of the series. It is remarkable the present piece saw as much circulation as it did. The surfaces are smooth and largely unabraded beneath the rich, even patina. A solitary rim mark is noted at 5 o'clock. Census: 16 in 45, 48 finer (3/17).
